The one about day 29 of 366: preview of an automotive dream

I'm sorry I've been so meta on this blog.  It was really my intention to rant about bad driving, my love of cars, love of tech and just the oddness of being me.

I have promised myself some sort of ridiculous automobile for my 40th bday. It just dawned on me that this milestone is right around the corner. I've had aspirations for a Nissan GTR, BMW M5, or a Porsche (of some sort). Weird collection but if I was infinitely rich or had more disposable income. I'd have all three. Not for status, but more because I like the driving characteristics of the BMW M5 and the GTR, and for the Porsche the sound of the engine behind me. It's neat.

About a year ago I got hip to the Porsche Cayman. Having driven a 911 at uncomfortable speeds, I was intrigued by how driveable the Cayman was reviewed to be. Very well balanced and not a pendulum waiting to kill you like a 911 (this is not as bad in recent 911s... But it still feels funny in the seat of my pants at speed through a turn).

The GTR is still impossibly expensive for my pocket book and future expenses I foresee. The used 2009 GTR are still holding steady not too far off of their original price. A bit much for that age car for me. Well worth it though to others.

The M5 is another interesting one, but it appears the previous v10 version is questionable in reliability. And the even older e39 (which I love) is technology deficient.

So back to the Porsche. On Friday I went to Porsche of St. Louis to take a gander. Since I was dreaming about a Cayman I figure I should drive one first.

I took a spin and loved every minute.  This car was everything I dreamed of. Uncomfortableness of a sports car, rumbling engine noise behind, and a lightening quick shifting transmission. Perfection.

Now I just have to wait till next year. 😄

This will make a great duo next year.

This will make a great duo next year.

I did drive a special one of a kind Dinan 328 s3 car. It was neat, but too smooth. Oddly while the car was quick it just never felt that way. Weird as it all about perspective. The looseness of my 330ci and rumble of its exhaust just makes it feel like a true sports sedan/coupe.

If I didn't already have my c class. I could see this, but all in all it feels the same as the c class.

The one about day 27 & 28 of 366: farewell edition

This past Thursday was my last day with my employer. I start at a new employer on Monday, I'm excited as I usually am when it comes to major change in my life. Maybe I'm actually suffering from anxiety.

I'll miss my peeps from my former job. Wednesday was my last time travelling to the actual headquarters. That was also surreal.

The surrealism could be related to the fact that I don't think I'll see these people again. My other jobs I knew I would see my peers again as Saint louis IT is sooo small. Oddly enough this job was the first I've worked in Saint Louis where none of my previous circles intersected with anyone. (Well just about none, there is one bit that intersected), I might share that story publicly one day, it is funny).  Given the industry I was in, the industry I'm going to and the fact hq is in Illinois, it seems highly unlikely for a chance encounter. I'd always welcome it though since I try maintain relationships with previous coworkers and jobs.

The one about day 26 and 27 of 366: baby and dog edition

Baby Humans  are fun especially once they cross the six month phase to me. Since I love so far away from my sisters and my children are old, I get my fill with other people's babies. As such I get to enjoy the company of my friend's Phil and Dawn's super fun twins.

Here is one of them, one who happened to steal my hair cut.

Now for today. Those who own dogs. You know that when you eat they magically appear out of no where. Well yours might not. Mine does. She's spoiled.

That's all I got for tonight. Yes I know my trash needs to be taken out, that's why I have teenage workers in this house.

The one about day 25 of 366: the goldilocks of IT jobs edition

The cat is out of the bag and I have three days left at my current place of employment. Each job change I've been through has been difficult. This one though has been more difficult than any other time. I'm leaving this job feeling defeated. Why, because there was(is) so much opportunity for improvement and I never got traction to do what I do. I have had a lot of success at previous places and this job seemed like a great place for some career defining impact. What happened?  In a nutshell I got challenged ways mentally that I was prepared for. This was a graduate course in learning how to lead from a subordinate position, and I'll admit I have a lot to learn. I'm skilled in diplomacy but not sure how to utilize that skill in order to lead people in a direction.

Anyways. I have a new job. I'm fairly certain that this job will remove me from hardware interaction. That makes me sad, but then again I realize I'm getting old and focusing and sharpening on one area is long over due.

This server just got a 256GB upgrade in the RAM department. I got to be a cheerleader.

The one about days 23 and 24 of 366: photoshoot and church edition

Last weekend I got to put on my Kurt Hutchinson Photography hat. Winter gigs are interesting as you have to work quick with respect to your model. Well we did it, had some fun. And was even able to have some fun with my Aunt Kim at the same time.

image.jpg

By the way this shoot was for JeannePaul Creations. If you need some fabulous winter accessories that are super warm and attractive. Check them out.

Sunday I learned about faith through adversity at the journey. Great sermon, it should be posted next week. I think the message was inspiring and a good take out of 1st Peter chapter 1.

The One about Days 19, 20, 21 & 22: Winter wonderland, Stacey Dash and new adventures

Woo, somehow I let a week go bye, and didn't get around to posting anything. A lot has been in motion for me. A lot has been discussed last week. We had a blizzard hit the East, we had Stacey Dash speak outside of her race's party line, we Aunt Viv clap back on Will and Jada. So much fun last week. Of course my pictures mainly reflect my experiences but I'll surely add some commentary.

Embarrassing city crippling snow.  (Tuesday night)

Embarrassing city crippling snow.  (Tuesday night)

So last week, the St. Louis area got a minor dusting of snow. Its had to write about and take serious after seeing the deluge of snow on the East. But it happened, I took some pictures because well snow is pretty when you only get 2 inches of it.  Of course this 2 inches caused school closures and a whole scene here. Quite embarrassing to me, but I also understand it since people here lose their ability to drive aggressively defensive.

While this snow is coming down, we get blessed with a video from JanetHubert aka Aunt Viv version 1.0. (people who had tv in the 90s know who I am talking about). Janet, made some very good points and it got a meta-discussion going. Will and Jada might not be the people who necessarily have a case about being slighted by the academy, They very well could of boycotted this over others being snubbed, but please there hasn't been a Will Smith movie where I felt was Oscar worthy for him as an actor or the movie itself. Furthermore, Janet makes great points in calling out the real travesties that have occurred where the Smith family has been silent, not to mention the fact that Will hadn't shown solidarity with his fellow black actors in their time of need.

The real argument though is the academy awards. As I understand this, there has not been fair representation of black actors and actresses being nominated for this prestigious award, nor have films that have deemed Oscar worthy been nominated. My personal opinion is that while there have been some notable performances that have been snubbed (Selma comes to mind). The anger is misdirected. Looking at past Academy award winning movies, and the actors/actresses that have won, it appears there is a certain feel to these movies, and as such you never see black actors and actresses in these movies. Never might be a bit strong. But its rare. Take the 1999 movie American Beauty, I loved that movie , but its a very unique piece of art. I can't think of many movies that fit that mold with a leading black actor/actress and that's disappointing. This isn't an indictment on black actors and actresses, but more so on the industry. I don't know if works like American Beauty are offered to those of color. But clearly these are the "types" of movies that win. I use American Beauty as an example as any race could of been featured in that movie and the same story could of been told. Two recent Black men who've won were Jamie Foxx and Denzel. Collectively those two roles were amazing. For the very reason that it didn't look like Jamie acting like Ray Charles or Denzel acting like a crooked cop. You believed the role and no longer saw Jamie or Denzel, but rather their characters. Will Smith has never achieved that, as far as I'm concerned its always Will Smith acting like _____insertCharacterHere____. Which is not Oscar worthy. Let me take that back, there is one movie that was believable that Will performed in, and could of won an academy award for: The Pursuit of Happiness. That was good work and as such Will was nominated for best actor.   He was bested by fellow black actor Forest Whitaker.

With all that said, there should be hanger. Selma deserved to be nominated and most certainly, David Oyelowo deserved a nomination for his role as Martin Luther King.

All of this lead to ">Stacey Dash's comment on the matter. She stated that the real issue is that there aren't enough opportunities (as I stated above as well), and that with BET awards and image awards there is a promotion of segregation, and perhaps if we want equality those should be gone. There is some truth to the statement. Since there are these awards designed by the black community for "urban" artists, why the furor over the academy awards in themselves. Most noted is that John Singletary also espoused statements that supported was counter to the popular opinion of black people, yet he's left alone.

Its rather immature to see the responses of people who disagree with Stacey. Name-calling (cooning, need to trade in her race card)  its uncalled for. She stated an opinion. Big deal. And what's crazy is her initial sentence is ignored. There aren't roles for black people in academy winning movies. That is the crime. But no one ever wants to do root cause analysis on the job or in real life. Its annoying that we have this culture of, well you don't agree with me therefore you are stupid. Not that you made a stupid comment that shows lack of intelligence. You're considered stupid for not agreeing with the Party (race) lines.

These extracurricular things dominated my time in terms of facebook debate and conversations. its all silly. I have yet another topic for another day. I'd like to know how backwards St. Louis area public schools are in terms of teaching black history. I don't know if I was well educated on my own or if my Honors & AP History classes in my Indiana high school did an above average job of teaching all of history. It sure seems that way as a high percentage of my fellow black people I meet in the Saint Louis area paint a picture that details a school life where the only time they learned black history was during black history month. Disturbing if you ask me.

Now for the REST pictures for the week.

The one about day 16, 17, & 18: too much to write about edition

This past weekend was interesting. Besides being bombarded with life, I had some time to reflect on the holiday season being over, the life of a leader whose life was ended too soon, and the bitter cold. My mind hasn't been clear recently and I'd like to write some about Mlk and what he means to me in contrast to the life we have today. But I can't get the words out.

I'd like to talk about this cold weather, but my hands are frozen.

I'd like to talk trash about my neighbor and the fact that they are still shining their Christmas lights, but my decorations are still outside (not that I put them there).

So I'll leave you with these images in order from Saturday to today.

The one about day 15 of 366: a man's best friend edition

We are doing some remote dog sitting this weekend. Interesting seeing the different personality of dogs. The dog that we are watching this weekend is normally a high energy puppy, tonight, not so much. He was missing his pack. When we first got there he was just scary and hiding in the back of his crate. Embarrassed that I couldn't even coax him out with treats we called our friends. They gave us some advice in slightly tipping the crate. Well that did the trick. He came out, but still really leery to the situation. It took a while but eventually we got him to go outside and do his business. The next trick was getting him to eat. We put his bowl out, he had no cares about that. Eventually I picked up one morsel and he ate it out of my hand. We put some on the floor and he ate it. But he refused to eat out of his bowl. So strange. Again after some time, he finally did the right thing and ate out of his bowl. Job accomplished. We are debating bringing him home and seeing if he gets along with Buttercup so he's not alone.

The one about day 14 of 366: no meat edition

I like to try different things. A good friend of mine suggested trying a restaurant yesterday called The treehouse. This restaurant specializes in vegan and vegetarian dishes. I gotta say the food was great. A tad expensive, but nonetheless good. Of course I took an obligatory picture.

image.jpg

Pictured above was fried beets, I can't remember what the drink was, it was decent but not necessarily a drink I'll order again.

But overall this is a good place to eat in St. Louis.

The one about Day 13 of 366: over it edition

Well I didn't win the powerball and the Rams have left.  I was lazy yesterday.  There were a couple of pictures I thought about taking. But I was still obsessed on reading or watching any person communicating about the Rams departure. Wasted my time doing that along with watching tv.

While watching rci was doing my normal browsing and noticed on ESPN.com that the Rams were still listed as a favorite. Well that needs to change. If I'm rooting for an nfc west team not local to me it will be Seattle by default. Not because of being a bandwagon. But I have family in Seattle that root for them.

image.jpg

The one about the LA Rams and St. Louis

The one about the LA Rams and St. Louis

I was never a real Rams fan. I rooted for them as part of civic pride, but I was never a real fan. In fact, before moving here I actively rooted against them as they beat my beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC championship game back in the tail end of the 1999-2000 season.

Before that game occurred, the Rams got on my radar when they beat the 49ers shortly after my first son was born, and before that, when they were moved to Saint Louis.  I had never heard much about the Rams before then. They weren't the colossal losers that Tampa was (so there weren't jokes about the Rams) Historically i knew of Eric Dickerson but I can't say I ever saw a Rams game on TV until that Superbowl season.

In 2003 my family and I moved to Saint Louis (my wife's hometown). After coming off of a Superbowl run in Tampa, and the Rams being recently good, I was hoping to be entertained by the local team and continue to have reason to hate on them. But a funny thing happened, they became terrible. Little did I know the first year I lived in Saint Louis would be the best the Rams would ever be during my 13 years here.

So enough of my personal Rams history. The Rams are now the LA Rams, back to where they came from. Personally I don't have issue with this in itself. But what I do have a problem with is how it went down, and the implications for the region racially.

The Rams moved here from LA over issues with public funding for a new stadium. St Louis had a stadium as they were trying for an expansion team to replace the Cardinals which had left 1987 over stadium issues. With that move the Rams who were very mediocre at the time came to live in the newly built domed stadium. The deal that was made for the Rams to come is the very deal that allowed them to move.

Whomever was on the committee to bring the Rams to St. Louis was smart in that they wrote it in such a way that the Rams would have an out.  It was irresponsible, a tax-payer financed stadium, that built in promises to be among the top 25%. Who would agree to such a thing? Looking at the Edward Jones dome now, I have to wonder what NFL stadiums looked like in the 90s for someone to make such a deal. The stadium is extremely vanilla, has hard to see score boards. Its terrible. But in the same breath, it was new in 1995, it was what the Rams wanted and it brought the region something that was taken from them.

The Rams were stable in their losing ways until Georgia Frontierre (the owner) died. The team was passed on to her kids and they subsequently put the team for sale. People grew concerened, but then a buyer stepped up from Urbana, Illinois. Shad Khan, he was a fan of the team and wanted to purchase it. However that got blocked by the minority owner at the time Stan Kroenke. Stan made big promises of keeping the team in Saint Louis and doing great things. people around town were immediately leery.

I participate in a lot of civic events here in Saint Louis. I've met the CEOs of many billion dollar companies. But I've never seen Stan Kroenke. That's telling. Its also his prerogative. This relationship with Stan and St. Louis never  appeared healthy. Also as a sports owner I feel he's terrible. All of his team are terrible, but they make money. So in the end, you have to understand that this guy counts wins only with dollars. No emotion here with him and his city. So,  this end result should of been expected.

This comes to the illusion that the NFL is America's sport and  that they care. Now this is the part that i take issue with.  Here you have a community that centers itself around being a great sports town, supporting a losing team through thick and thin. And no cares given.  Concussions, Domestic Violence more and more you see the NFL is a mix of cronyism and pure capitalism. Which leads more and more to it to being less about the sport and more about the dollar. So given that, LA is a no brainer. Just like the move to St. Louis in 1995 was a no brainer. But, if you factor in human emotion and "NFL Cares". You get something that doesn't add up.

St. Louis as a region is a hot mess right now when it comes to social issues. There is a very segregated mentality mixed with classicism here. The Rams were the only team here that featured African American players (as of now Since Heyward left the baseball Cardinals). Strange for a city which is predominantly black, the region is closer to the national average. The people who are quick to call black people thugs can be found here. The Rams I felt played a role in having some form of representation to  the city youth. Representing successful athletes to those in this city. It made it real. Now i'm not the guy who advocates that kids should strive to be sports stars. but i do understand having representation and what it means to see someone like you (physical representation) on TV as a means to show that you can make it out of your situation. This region has had its turmoil with the Ferguson incident and the negative racial profiling by police in the fiefdoms of St. Louis County. If I had a heart and was already making millions (in the league) I can't see how I (Roger Goodell) could support moving a team from this region at this time. It just seems  callous and heartless to support this move. Saint Louis needed the Rams not just for entertainment, but it helped with this racially fractured city. Even when some of the Rams players used their platform to show support for the Brown family during the Ferguson issues and the many in the city balked at that. It was needed. This city needs to have more minorities in the limelight who have influence. It pushes conversation and it keeps things balanced.

Now I say all the above and it might seem one sided, I'm not naive though. St. Louis the region set themselves up for failure with that terrible leasing deal with the dome they built. They set up expectations by financing the stadium with tax-payer dollars. They brought in a guy to help bring the team here who wasn't loyal, wasn't really known as a St. Louis guy either. Then when given a chance they punted on upgrading the stadium to the requirements of the owner. Now that might seem crazy, but the precedence had been set by how you got the team to being with. I'm sure now, the $700m to upgrade the dome sounds so much more palatable now as it probably means the team is still here. And it probably would of made more sense anyhow, if you are using tax payer money, to go ahead and fix what you got. Instead of building another tax payer financed building, while still paying for the original.

Stan is right about one thing, the Rams will never be as popular as the baseball Cardinals. But in the same breath the baseball Cardinals never held the city hostage . When they couldn't get public financing for the entire stadium. They got 80% of the money on their own. Which is how it should of always been.

I'll miss the Rams here for the sheer fact that all my St. Louis family and friends will miss them. I'm hurt by them moving because my family and friends are hurt. But personally, I couldn't care less.

The one about day 12 of 366: smart thermostat edition

Alright, so this one is kind of a cheap picture.  When I got home from work yesterday I noticed that it was much cooler than it normally is in my house.  My wife and kids told me I was freezing them out because of my crazy thermostat.

I was ecstatic to see the picture I took. But I did feel bad that it was in the 60s while we normally keep the house 75. The way our Honeywell Lyric works is that it begins warming the house as soon as mine or wife's phone crosses a geofence line. Apparently this feature isn't working for my wife so what happened was the house stayed cold until I came within range.  Oops.

Well I'll have to put some logic in the lyric to go ahead and start warming the house a bit earlier and ignore my location.

The one about day 11 of 366: watching college football with my dog edition

College football is hard to watch when you're a casual fan that watches the nfl. I forget these are kids so all these mental mistakes are irritating. Anyhow good run Clemson. Literally special teams was the difference.

funny I don't feel the same about college basketball.

The one about day 9 and day 10 of 366: friends and family edition

I didn't trip. I got my pictures on each day. Just deciding to post them up now. We had a small  get together at The house yesterday. It was cool, I still haven't figured out how to blend my friends together yet. It seems that my dining room is closed off from the rest of the house. What happens is that one set of people will get in there and have great conversation. Then a different party will form in the rest of the house which is all connected.

i got ideas for the next party.

The one about day 8 of 366: work hard play hard edition

These are my people. Not my normal 9 to 5. But I've spent enough time with these people that I can appreciate the time and all the characters. positive work relationships are another that are key to my life. Not being fake, but really understanding. I'll dive more into this later.

The one about Day 7 of 366: this guy edition

Friends are important. Diversity in friendship doubly important. This is my friend Peter. We can have the best conversations about everything. Feelings are never a concern because this is a conversation rooted in honesty and a want to have perspective. We attend the same church, but we have way different paths to the same place in life. Love this brother.

The one about day 6 of 366: unexpected detour edition

Okay, I promise to actually get something other than in my car shots. But bear with me. Tonight driving home from the farm the police detoured me. This is serious as I only know how to get to my job and how to get home. Also the direction of the detour was towards flooding and it was a narrow gravely road. All horrible.

While on his detour I had no usable signal from sprint or AT&T. And my car's sat-Nav considered this off the beaten course.

I made it home. It was only 5 miles out of my way but certainly not comfortable.

Off napped road?

Off napped road?

Yes the road was that narrow. Wasn't fun when someone had to come from opposite direction.

Day 5 of 366 : more graffiti edition

I kind of mailed it in today. But grabbed a neat shot of some graffiti I like. I think it's decent considering where it is.

On a side note. I just realized my dashcam has been rolling over my footage. So slight delay on that fun.

The one about day 4 of 366: drive home edition

I left work during the magic hour. The special time when the sun is setting and basks an immense glow. I love it. However I do not love winter. So I took these as I drove home from work. Normally I'm working out of downtown Saint Louis, but occasionally I get out to the farm in order to get face time with the rest of my coworkers.

Normally there are crops here.

Normally there are crops here.

Someone's farm

Someone's farm

Almost home

Almost home

I couldn't choose one. So here are four of my faves.

The one about the new year and goals

Today I was asked what my goals were. I didn't set any this year. I mean, yeah I'm attempting to take one solid picture a day. That picture might be technically great or have a story attached. But for real life goals I don't have any. I have long term things I'd like to get done. But don't have thing short term. Maybe this is something I should do.

A lot of people set goals that require discipline. Financial discipline, dietary discipline, education are some of the popular ones. I had once set a goal that I'd gain 35 pounds. Never achieved or even came close. To be honest, I think that's harder than losing weight. Another goal I had was to teach myself C# in a way that I could write some cool app, but again lack of discipline and real desire got in the way.

i think the problem is, most of the times the things that I wanted or needed to do was always out of necessity. I haven't needed to weigh more, I certainly have had career success without the ability to write my own app. Even photography became a thing from where I just taught myself without setting out to become a photographer. I don't know what it is to have purposeful discipline.  To have a drive to do something based on an arbitrary deadline.

I liken myself to a just-in-time person. I'd like to change that. But I don't know how.   it would be way to cliche to say this is my New Years goal is to become goal oriented. But it is something I'd like to figure out.

Maybe my photo project as random as it is, it might be the key to becoming disciplined to do something just for the sake of doing it. Keep me accountable people.

thanks for reading.
